As the president works to get rid of the rights for transgender people that Obama introduced, Julie had a powerful message for him:

“Please keep an open mind. Please think.”

Julie also talked about how she has always stood up for the LGBTQ community. She said that her background in theater meant that LGBTQ people had always been important to her.

“Anyway, the theater is such a free and open place. I don’t think there has ever been a time when I wasn’t a friend. I have to say, though, that I was very aware of bias and bigotry in my city and community, and I didn’t understand it.

She says that her environment made her tolerant.

“I was taught not to be or think that way, and I’ve always found it strange that the world doesn’t just accept people as they are. But I’ve never come across it by accident. It’s just always been a part of me, I think because of the jobs I’ve had. But also how I was brought up.”

Julie and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton are in a new Netflix show for kids called Julie’s Greenroom.

Emma spoke out:

“My mother is my mother. My dad is a Broadway stage designer, so I grew up learning about the arts and culture of New York theater, movies, and other things. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t feel like the LGBTQ group was a part of my life and reality.

The mother-daughter team said they tried to make the show varied, and it even has a character who isn’t a man or a woman.

Andrews married set designer Tony Walton in Weybridge, Surrey, on May 10, 1959. They met for the first time in 1948, when Andrews was in a show called “Humpty Dumpty” at the London Casino. Andrews later married director Blake Edwards in 1969, making her Jennifer and Geoffrey’s stepmother. In the 1970s, Edwards and Andrews adopted two Vietnamese girls. In 1974, they took in Amy, who later became Amelia, and in 1975, they took in Joanna.

They were married for 41 years, until he died in Santa Monica, California, on December 15, 2010. He had lived for 88 years. Andrews has nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
