Disney Plus’s plan to stop people from sharing passwords seems to be happening much faster than planned. A story from Whatsondisneyplus.com says that the first signs of this strategy being enforced are already happening, at least in Canada.
We already know that the new ad-supported tier of Disney Plus will go live in Canada, the UK, and Europe on November 1, 2023. This plan will run alongside a normal, more expensive ad-free plan, which will allow for two different streams.
The kicker is that before the new tiers are set up in Canada, updated customer agreements are being sent to Disney Plus users with more information about how sharing passwords will be restricted.
The new rules about sharing accounts say, “Unless your Service Tier lets you, you can only share your access with people in your home. “A ‘household’ is the group of things that belong to your main personal residence and are used by the people who live there.”
The blurb goes on to say, “We may, at our own judgment, look at how you use your account to see if you are following this Agreement. If we find that you have broken this Agreement, we may reduce or end your access to the Service and/or take any other steps allowed by this Agreement.”
Google says that a Disney Plus help page was changed less than a week ago to make it clear who can use the same account.
The help text now says, “You can’t share your account or subscription with people outside of your household. This is the same as the subscriber agreement in Canada, which I mentioned above.” “A ‘household’ is the group of things that belong to your main personal residence and are used by the people who live there.”
Disney Plus Initiates Password-Sharing Crackdown Earlier Than Anticipated!
This is a bit surprising because, as the story says, Disney CEO Bob Iger had previously talked about a crackdown on password sharing and efforts to “drive monetization” for Disney’s streaming service more successfully in this way, but said that these things wouldn’t happen until 2024.
In fact, we were told that the real plans might not be carried out until more like 2025, and that there might not be much to worry about in the near future.
But it looks like the gears are already turning and things are getting set up, at least in Canada and more generally in Disney’s Help Centre. This suggests that this will happen before 2023 is over.
That would also give the impression that the rules are going to be enforced soon somewhere else. So, if you thought you didn’t have to worry about this problem until a long time from now, like when Netflix made it illegal to share passwords, that may not be the case.
We shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on just one report, but what we’re hearing here is definitely scary and a strong sign that the crackdown on password sharing is much closer than we thought.
There are also other questions about the new policy, like how it might work if you’re traveling and want to use your Disney Plus account from, say, an Airbnb. At this point, there are definitely more questions than answers, so let’s hope that Disney will explain things. Stay tuned with Crossover99 for more latest Updates.
