Adut Akech Bior is a South Sudanese-Australian model. Before discovering her own pregnancy, Adut Akech had a vivid dream that her sister was expecting. The dream was so real that Akech woke up in the middle of the night and urgently called her sister to confirm. Her sister reassured her that she was not pregnant.
However, Akech saw this dream as a sign. The next day, she developed an unusual craving for oranges, continuously peeling them at home and carrying bags of orange slices with her. She also experienced an unprecedented level of exhaustion, despite her demanding schedule, which included attending the Valentino show in Paris, participating in multiple photo shoots, and returning to Adelaide, Australia.
The revelation came when Akech was picking up her car from the service center, still carrying her bag of oranges, and suddenly felt nauseous. It was at that moment she realized she might need to take a pregnancy test. After taking five tests, all confirming the same result, Akech confirmed that she was indeed pregnant.
At 24, Adut Akech is three years younger than the U.S. average age for first-time mothers. She has always envisioned becoming a young mom, cherishing the idea of growing up alongside her children. This mirrors her own relationship with her mother, who had her when she was 20. “The age difference really contributes to how close we are,” Akech notes. Additionally, Akech has a deep love for children and hopes to have at least four, ideally five, or even six if some of them end up as twins.
“When you don’t come from much, you don’t really value the material stuff,” she says. “I could have easily gotten carried away with the life that I now live. But I think I’ve always just in the back of my head: Remember where you came from,” she says. “If I can take care of my family and take care of myself, that’s it, I’m happy.”
“I just want to teach my kids what’s valuable. And what’s not,” she adds, before pausing. “Just to be a kind, decent human being.”
Her children will definitely have to work. Although their mother is a world-renowned supermodel, “My mom didn’t have anything! I bought my own first car—so I’m going to make sure that my kid buys their own first car,” she says.
Later that evening, Adut Akech will host a gender-reveal party with her family, partner Samuel Elkhier, and a few close friends. She’s thrilled to discover whether she’s expecting a boy or a girl, and she’s also looking forward to wearing a stylish outfit for the first time in months. “I lived in the same three pairs of sweatpants. One was Alo. One was Lululemon. The other one might’ve been Victoria’s Secret.”
With approximately 10 weeks left in her pregnancy, the model is both astonished by how far she has come and aware of the journey still ahead. “I’m just waddling around like, ‘What the fuck is this? What is this?’” she says, exaggerating her movements to comedic effect. But after gathering herself together, she looks me straight in the eye. “Women…we’re built different, honestly,” she says. “I don’t think men could ever.”
