Andy Buckley got his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Stanford University. He got a typical nine-to-five job soon after he graduated. Even so, he still found time for his hobbies and interests.
Buckley went to the Groundlings Theatre to learn sketch comedy and acting. There, he got to work with comics like Melissa McCarthy and Dax Shepard.

“After I graduated from Stanford, I moved to New York and studied acting. Then I moved to L.A. and tried to act, but I wasn’t very good at it. I wasn’t really trying, and I wasn’t doing things the right way.
Then I said, ‘I’ve got to get my act together.’ In fact, my wife said, “You better get your act together, buddy.” “Merrill-Lynch was kind enough to hire me,” Buckley told Boston Magazine in a 2016 interview.

Andy Buckley had a hard time getting new acting jobs, so he quit acting and got a full-time job in business. But he decided to try acting again when he ran into famous casting director Allison Jones, who was also from Massachusetts and was looking for players for a new show called The Office.
Buckley chose to give it a shot, and even though he worked full-time at Merrill Lynch, he got the job. It turns out that the main reason he was chosen to play David Wallace was because he had worked in business before.
“She told me, ‘I think they’ll like that you’re some kind of financial guy, and you might be the right guy.'” Then they gave me a job. There were only a few scenes in that one day.

“After that, I went back to being a stockbroker,” Buckley told Boston Magazine.
“A year later, they called, and I got to do a few big shows near the end of that season. I started doing more before the writers’ strike.
Then, when the writers’ strike ended in 2008, they used me a lot for the next three seasons, which was great because I got to be in movies and other TV shows. I also got some partners at work because I was out of the office a lot and they were doing most of the work.
Buckley was a regular on The Office, but he never quit his job at Merrill Lynch and treated The Office as a side job. He worked for this trading company for more than 10 years as a financial manager.
