As Anthony Kapel Jones, Van Jones was born to middle school principal Willie and high school teacher Loretta Jones on September 20, 1968, in Jackson, Tennessee. Angela is his twin sister, and they’re identical twins.

He was instrumental in the establishment of several student newspapers during his time there, including the Fourteenth Circle at the University of Tennessee and the Periscope at Vanderbilt.
Jones eventually attended Yale Law School, where he earned his J.D. in 1993. He then uprooted to San Francisco, California, where he joined several communist activist organizations. The socialist collective that Jones helped form was called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement.

Jones Became a Legal Observer in The City Thanks to His Membership in The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. He started the Bay Area Police Watch Initiative in 1995. Jones Established the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights the Following Year.
Jones and Police Watch Organized a Campaign that Resulted in The Dismissal of San Francisco Police Department Officer Marc Andaya in 1997.
