Archive 81 Season 1 Ending Explained
The finale begins on a sweet note. Jess and Melody bond in a park in a new video. “When I’m older,” Jess says. “I want to be a bird that can fly away and see everything from the sky.” But Melody doesn’t know what she wants from the future, which subtly sets up both of their fates by the end of the episode.
The scene then shifts to Melody’s confinement in a psychiatric ward. Dan’s father, Steven, says he has Melody there for her own protection, promising to whisk her out of town in a few hours. Given that Samuel’s cult is still out there, desperate to use Melody in demonic rituals, some protection would be nice, but this isn’t ideal.
At the very least, Melody has been reunited with her best friend. Annabel has also been confined to this hospital, drawing pictures of Iris Vos, the debutante who attempted to summon Kaelego in the 1920s. “She’s not dead,” Annabel says. “She’s inside. Another world. She summons me.

“The Ferryman had arrived. I can’t see him any longer, but he’s still up there. The door is opened by the comet. The ritual will be performed tonight to open the door.”
The Episode Review
What a delectably twisted Twilight Zone ending! There’s a lot to unpack here, and it’s left up to interpretation as to where Dan will end up. I’d guess he’s still in the Other World, having been duped into believing he was in a coma the whole time to feed the demon and keep Dan unconcerned about his reality.
Now, Julia warned Dan that he would be tempted, and if this is true, it certainly adds up.
Despite Archive 81’s strengths, the show has been a little messy at times, particularly with this ending. It not only rushes the conclusion (which is unusual given the slow pace of the show), but it also fails to fully explain everything.
Iris is still a source of contention, as is the manner in which Baldungs are chosen, or how Melody was able to communicate with and see Dan while Iris was unable to do so. The show has been a little sloppy and a little light on horror. When it comes to mystery and drama, this film has plenty of it, but does the end justify the means? I’m not convinced.

This may seem strange (especially given how positive I’ve found the episodes), but Archive 81 feels like a patchwork of different horror concepts stitched together into a story that’s more investigative drama horror (a la The Ring) than a genuinely creepy multi-dimension thriller.
Archive 81 could have used a little more editing to make it a little more palatable, but the ending certainly leaves room for a potential sequel. Will Netflix, however, renew this one? We’ll have to wait and see.
