Aaron Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” on February 7 that he was going to a “darkness retreat.” Since then, there have been a lot of questions about what that means and what it means for his future in the NFL.

The 39-year-old Packers quarterback talked to McAfee for 40 minutes on February 14 and again spent a lot of time talking about the upcoming retreat and what he hopes to get out of it.

From his two interviews, here’s what we know about Rodgers’ upcoming darkness retreat.

What is an Isolation Retreat in the Dark?

A darkness retreat is a time of total isolation, often in a remote place, where you spend a certain number of days in total darkness. Rodgers will spend four days in an unannounced place in a one-room house.

The monks and lamas of Tibet and the ancient Egyptians used darkness retreats hundreds of years ago. Spiritual traditions from the past and the present often have people retreat to the dark, where they spend time in deep meditation in silence.

No music, books, TV, or phones. Rodgers said it has to do with “sensory deprivation.” “It’s figuring out how to deal with the silence and your own thoughts,” he said.

There is a toilet and a bathtub in the middle of the room. Rodgers said that food will be brought to him once a day through a slot in the door. He has also said that his story could be turned into a movie.

What Does a Darkness Retreat Involve?

The Hermitage, a darkness retreat in Guatemala, costs between $840 and $2,000 (depending on how many days you go) and is called “a very intense practice.” Its website says that no one talks to users unless they need to, and they can get help if they need it.

Its website says, “Dark Retreat is a practice for those who feel called to go deep inside themselves and rest in meditation for many hours a day over several days.” From the inside, the door is locked, but people can leave if they want to.

The Hermitage website said, “Retreating into total darkness is a common practice in many ancient and modern spiritual traditions around the world.”

In a remote part of Oregon’s wilderness, Sky Cave Resorts has cabins and cottages built into the hillside and buried in the ground. The site has a self-contained off-grid system to power the ventilation fans, propane hot water heater, and lights that are sometimes used during the integration process.

However, the land is off-grid and out of cell service range. The cabins are soundproof, and anyone who wants to leave can ring a bell inside the dark rooms. Rodgers said that the door to his retreat isn’t locked, so if he wanted to leave at any time, he could. But he doesn’t think that’s going to happen to him.

When Will Aaron Rodgers Go to His Retreat in the Dark?

Rodgers hasn’t said what day he will go in, but he did say on Tuesday that it will be at the end of the week. Most of the time, people go into dark retreats at night or around sunset. Rodgers said that they come out at sunrise to reintegrate their vision, which can take between eight and ten hours.
