Lyonne was raised as an Orthodox Jew because both of her parents came from Orthodox Jewish families.

Her Hungarian-Jewish parents, who had lived through the Holocaust, gave birth to her in Paris, France. Lyonne has said that her family is made up of “Flatbush on my dad’s side and Auschwitz on my mom’s side.” Her grandmother Ella came from a big family, but only she, her two sisters, and her two brothers made it. Her parents got a divorce, and Lyonne, her older brother Adam, and their mother moved back to the United States. After moving back to New York City, Lyonne went to the private Jewish Ramaz School, where she took honors Talmud classes and learned how to read Aramaic.

Lyonne was no longer close to her father, who ran as a Democrat for the sixth district of Manhattan on the New York City Council in 2013 and lived on the Upper West Side until he died in October 2014. She has said that she doesn’t get along with her mother and has lived mostly on her own since she was 16.
