Early Life and Education
Natasha Bianca Lyonne Braunstein was born on April 4, 1979, in New York City. She is the daughter of Ivette Buchinger and Aaron Braunstein, who was a radio host, race car driver, and boxing promoter. Lyonne was raised as an Orthodox Jew because both of her parents came from Orthodox Jewish families.
Her Hungarian-Jewish parents, who had lived through the Holocaust, gave birth to her in Paris, France. Lyonne has said that her family is made up of “Flatbush on my dad’s side and Auschwitz on my mom’s side.” Her grandmother Ella came from a big family, but only she, her two sisters, and her two brothers made it. Lyonne thinks that the fact that they all had blonde hair and blue eyes made them the only ones to make it.
Morris Buchinger, who was Lyonne’s grandfather, ran a watch business in Los Angeles. During the war, he lived in Budapest and worked in a leather factory to hide from the Nazis.
The first eight years of Lyonne’s life were spent in Great Neck, New York. Then, she moved with her family to Israel, where she lived for a year and a half. When Lyonne was in Israel, she was in the Israeli children’s movie April Fool (1989), which is what got her interested in acting.
Her parents got a divorce, and Lyonne, her older brother Adam, and their mother moved back to the United States. After moving back to New York City, Lyonne went to the private Jewish Ramaz School, where she took honors Talmud classes and learned how to read Aramaic.
She was kicked out of school for selling marijuana there. Lyonne grew up on the Upper East Side and always felt like an outsider there. Her mother moved the family to Miami, where Lyonne went to Miami Country Day School.
She didn’t finish high school. She left before her senior year to go to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for a short time to study film and philosophy in a film program. Her high school diploma was dependent on her finishing her first year at Tisch, but she dropped out because she couldn’t afford the tuition.
Lyonne was no longer close to her father, who ran as a Democrat for the sixth district of Manhattan on the New York City Council in 2013 and lived on the Upper West Side until he died in October 2014. She has said that she doesn’t get along with her mother and has lived mostly on her own since she was 16.
