Joshua Basset Adores Harry Styles
In an interview in May, Bassett called Harry Styles “hot” and hinted that talking about how much he liked the “Watermelon Sugar” singer was his “coming-out video.”
Then he sent out a video of himself singing, along with a message that said, “People have told me I’m gay my whole life. People have put me down for things they didn’t understand. I want to thank everyone who stands up for love and acceptance. Toxic, hateful, and negative words say less about the topic and a lot more about the person who says them.”
“It’s 2021. We are the generation of love and growth, and it’s time to start acting like it “Bassett continued. “I love you whether you love me, hate me, or damn me to hell.
At the end of his note, he wrote, “Love who you love without any shame. It’s okay to not know who you are yet. Life is too short for hate and ignorance to win. I pick love. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜”
Is He Happy to Be a Part of The LGBTQ Community?
Bassett says in an interview with GQ that he is “at peace” with his own sexuality, but that he is against “coming out” because he doesn’t think it’s necessary. He also says that “people are welcome to have boxes if they want them.”
He also remembers people making rude comments about his sexuality when he was growing up: “People would tell me I was straight or that I couldn’t be gay because of XYZ. I had to deal with people not believing me no matter what when I talked about my sexuality.”
Concerning the pressure to define one’s sexuality, he said, “There are a lot of letters in the alphabet. Why to rush to a decision?” says the star. “Sometimes your letter changes, sometimes you try a different one, sometimes you find out you’re not what you thought you were, or maybe you always knew. All of these things are possible.”
Bassett says, “I’m glad to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community because everyone is welcome there.” “Don’t listen to anyone who says that love isn’t love. They are most likely the ones who need it the most.”
Joshua Was Sexually Abused When He Was a Child
In an interview that same day, Bassett said that he had been sexually abused as a child and teen. Bassett hasn’t named his abusers in public, but he has said in the past that a family member hurt him when he was 5 to 9 years old, and an older man in one of his theater groups hurt him when he was a teen.
“I just recently realized that I haven’t been able to deal with so much of it because I went into shock,” he says. “I’m still in the middle of the process, and I think it will go on for the rest of my life, but I’m learning to peel back the layers.”
Bassett wants to help other people by telling his story.
“People asking me why I didn’t do anything about it really bothers me,” he says. “When you put your computer into freeze mode, it shuts down completely. If someone like me, who has a lot of influence, was treated that way, what would happen to someone in a small town? I won’t stop talking about this until it’s a long time ago.”
