Tanya Sue Chutkan was born on July 5 1962 in Kingston Jamaica. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University in 1983 before pro to the University of Pennsylvania Law School where she was an associate editor at the University.

She graduated in 1987 as Juris Doctor. Tanya Sue from 1987 to 1990 served in a private practice law firm Hogan & Hartson known now as Hogan Lovells. She then worked at the law firm Donovan, Leisure, and Huge Schiller from 1990 to 1991.

She then worked as a trial attorney and supervisor at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 2002. She joined the law firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner in 2002 and was a partner by 2007. She was focused on complex civil litigation and specifically antitrust class action cases.

On December 19, 2013, she was nominated by former President Barack Obama as a United States judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, a seat that was created under 104 Stat. 5089. She received her first hearing before the United States Senate Judiciary Committee on February 25, 2014.

However, on March 27, 2014, her nominations were reported out of committee by a voice vote. The United States Senate however in June 3 2014 invoked cloture on her nomination by a 54 to 40 vote and her nomination was confirmed by a 95 to 0 vote on June 24, 2014, and she received her judicial commission on June 5, 2014.

Tanya Sue Chutkam is currently married to Peter A. Krauthmer. However, there is currently no news on how the couple met or when they got married. Peter Krauthamer was born on September 6, 1957, in New York and attended Brandeis University before attending Boston University of School of Law.

Peter Krauthamer served as a judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia from 2012 to 2023. The couple are living happily and they share two children.

In February 2017, Public Resource.org was sued by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The National Fire Protection, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers for scanning and making available building codes as well as fire codes which the organizations consider as their copyrighted property.

She ruled against the public Resource and ordered all of the standards to be deleted from the internet. The public Rwoaurce appealed her ruling to the D.C. Circuit which reversed and remanded her decision in 2018 stating that the fair use doctrines had been improperly applied.

Tanya then issued a new ruling in March 2022 that would allow Public Resource.org to reproduce 184 standards under fair use, partially 1 standard, and deny reproduction of 32 standards that were ground to differ in substantive ways from those incorporated by law. AsTM et Al. has since appealed again to the D.C. Circuit.

She also presided over the Imran Awan and Hina Alvi fraud case in the summer of 2017. In the case of Garza v. Hargan in 2017 she ordered the Office of Refugee Resettlement to allow a girl that was in their care to have an abortion. Which was followed by two other girls in their custody.

Tanya Sue Chutkan on November 9, 2021, denied former President Donald Trump’s plea to keep records from being released to the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The decision was also affirmed by the D.C.Circuit and the United States Supreme Court declined the review.
