The 2024 ESPY Awards started with the singer joining the tennis icon on stage, who is also the show’s host.
Ciara made a grand entrance at the 2024 ESPY Awards. The Grammy-winning R&B singer is married to a superstar athlete – NFL quarterback Russell Wilson.
The 38-year-old R&B singer performed as the opening music act at the annual ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 11. When Ciara performed with host Serena Williams, the crowd erupted with joy.
In 2004, Ciara started her set with her single “Goodies.” This hit record not only marked her debut as a professional artist but also served as the title track for her debut album.
Ciara has achieved eight top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Goodies” featuring Petey Pablo, which spent seven weeks at number one in 2004. She also has four top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, with “Ciara: The Evolution” debuting at number one in 2006.
Afterwards, Ciara transitioned into a medley of her hits, including “1, 2 Step” and “Level Up”. Following this, the 42-year-old tennis legend made a dramatic entrance through a lineup of girls dressed in her iconic performance outfits. The captivating show received a standing ovation, with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin and other NFL players applauding the women’s performance.
Ciara and Williams announced their performance at the ESPYs one day before in an Instagram post, sharing a selfie onstage with the caption: “This dynamic duo has something up their sleeves for the ESPYS this year 🏆.”
In a selfie video from the same post, 42-year-old Williams teased a “surprise” idea for the show’s opening slot, with Ciara popping up from behind to greet fans. “We have some fun surprises up our sleeve,” the tennis icon shared, while Ciara prepared to dazzle the audience.
Russell Wilson (Became The Highest-Paid Quarterback in the NFL), Ciara’s husband, showed equal excitement about their performance by reposting their selfie on his Instagram Stories, set to Ciara’s “Level Up,” and tagged them with a bunch of red heart emojis.
This year’s ESPYS performer lineup also includes:
FloJay Johnson, an NCAA college basketball player for Louisiana State University, is now set to perform on the show as well.
Lil Wayne and H.E.R. performed on last year’s ESPYS.
GloRilla is set to present on this year’s show, along with such actors and comedians as Quinta Brunson, Nikki Glaser, Rob Lowe, Colman Domingo, Daisy Ridley and Brian Tyree Henry and many top athletes.
This year at the ESPYs, Ciara is participating alongside Missy Elliott during her “Out of This World” tour, which kicked off in Vancouver, BC on July 4. The “Get Up” singer also released a remix of Christian rapper Hulvey’s 2023 song “Altar” in June.
Ciara said, “It was really important for me to use my platform to share this song because I believe songs like ‘Altar’ have the power to inspire, instill hope, and spread love!”
She added, “This is honestly one of my favorite features I’ve ever been a part of!”
