Connie Chiume, Iconic South African Actress and ‘Black Panther’ Star, Passes at 72

South African actress Connie Chiume, widely recognized in the U.S. for her roles in the Marvel “Black Panther” films, has passed away at the age of 72.

Her family shared the news of her death on Instagram, revealing that she died on Tuesday at a hospital in Johannesburg.

“The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement read. “Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital. … The Family asks for privacy during this difficult period.”

Chiume was a seasoned actress in South Africa who rose to prominence as apartheid came to an end, thanks to her roles in the acclaimed TV series “Inkom’ Edla Yodwa” and the soap opera “Rhythm City.” She showcased her talent across various TV shows and films, excelling in both drama and comedy. Her work earned her several prestigious South African film and television awards.

According to the reports, Connie Chiume initially worked as a teacher before launching her television career with roles in shows such as Rhythm City and Zone 14.

She entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2018, portraying a tribal leader in Black Panther and its 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her diverse roles also included appearances in the musical film Black Is King and the drama series Gomora.

Throughout her career, Chiume received numerous South African Film and Television Awards and was honored with the Living Legend award by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, at the inaugural Cultural and Creative Industry Awards in March.

“Her performances brought joy, inspiration, and a sense of pride to countless South Africans. She was more than an actress; she was a beacon of strength, resilience and grace,” McKenzie said in a statement after her death.

The South African Government paid tribute by writing on X, formerly Twitter, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered. #RIPConnieChiume.”

Several of Chiume’s friends and former co-stars from Black Panther have also shared their thoughts, including Lupita Nyong’o. “We have lost a library! May @conniechiume rest in peace and power,” she captioned a photo of the late actress on Instagram.

Winston Duke wrote on X, “Rest in peace my beautiful sister Connie Chiume. Thank you for the resilience and always inspired, present work you delivered in your long illustrious career.”
