Mariah Carey Faces Tragic Loss: Mother and Sister Pass Away on the Same Day “My Heart Is Broken”

Mariah Carey has confirmed that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend.
The 55-year-old Grammy winner shared, “My heart is shattered by the loss of my mother this weekend. Tragically, my sister also passed away on the same day.”
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” adds Mariah. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
No additional information is available regarding the causes of death for Patricia and Alison at this time.
Patricia, who was once married to Alfred Roy Carey, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. The couple had Alison, Mariah, and a son named Morgan before divorcing when Mariah was just three years old.
Mariah’s relationship with her mother, from whom she inherited her vocal talents, was complex throughout her life.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah described her relationship with her mother as complex and multifaceted: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”
She further elaborated, “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
In her memoir, Mariah Carey dedicated a part to her mother, Patricia, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah also described her relationship with her sister, Alison, as complicated. She noted in the memoir that, at least at the time, it felt “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison or their brother, Morgan.
