The Bahraini Royal House of Al-Khalifa includes Meriam bint Abdullah Al-Khalifa.
Meriam is well-known for running away from her family and home country of Bahrain to the United States. She eloped with US Marine Lance Corporal Jason Johnson, who was stationed in Bahrain at the time as part of a counter-terrorism unit protecting Americans living abroad.
After Lance Corporal Johnson helped Meriam sneak into the United States and US Customs threatened to send her back, Meriam was allowed to stay and apply for asylum.
She said she was afraid of honor violence from her family because she had left her country and started dating a non-Muslim.
In May 2001, the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service gave Meriam Al-Khalifa what is commonly called a “Green Card,” and she was also able to talk to her family in Bahrain again.
Meriam went back to Bahrain to see her family at the end of 2001, even though she had said in past interviews that she was afraid of dying or being hurt in her home country.
Meriam said that after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, she and her family were very worried about “violence against people of Middle Eastern descent.”

Where is Meriam Al Khalifa Right Now?
On November 17, 2004, one day after their fifth wedding anniversary and citing “incompatibility in marriage,” the famous couple filed for a divorce.

Meriam and her husband, Johnson, split up because Meriam was spending a lot of time in Las Vegas’s nightlife. Since 2001, the couple had talked about getting a divorce, and Jason said that was what Meriam wanted.
Johnson said, “Deep down, she knows that I loved her more than anything else in the world.” “I can say that every second I spent with her was fun.” In 2005, Johnson argued his case on an episode of Divorce Court without Meriam.
