Thorfinn is startled awake one morning by his dreams and discovers Einar next to him. Thorfinn remembers portions of his dream this time. Later that day, Einar informs his friend that he was dreaming of Askeladd.

Thorfinn ultimately informs Einar that Askeladd is his father’s murderer and that he has spent most of his life wishing to exact revenge on him for the murder. It appears that his lack of purpose or meaning in life has left him apathetic to most situations.

Sverkel takes the two to the beach for fishing before they can address the subject anymore. He shows them how he catches fish and invites them to try as well.

Why Do Einar and Thorfinn Fight With the Retainers?

When Einar and Thorfinn come to their crops one day, they are astounded to see that the wheat harvests have been purposefully uprooted. Einar notes that wheat is a hardy crop in general, and the perpetrators were aware of this as well, which is why they went so far as to attack the grain’s roots to ensure that the couple was rendered futile.

Thorfinn realizes Einar is enraged and capable of doing anything in his current state of mind, so he attempts to calm him down. Yet Einar is also irritated with his friend because he believes Thorfinn is unconcerned about what has just occurred to them.

Pater, who patiently listens to their story, eventually approaches the two of them with the case. He tells them that he would examine the case and requests that they leave the field to them because the perpetrators may have left some evidence there.

Pater then says that he, too, was once a slave and understands how difficult it may be at times. He has been discriminated against and bullied as well, so he understands Thorfinn and Einar’s anguish.

Thorfinn and Einar are strolling back for some rest, confident that justice will be served when they happen to cross paths with the retainers. When Einar confronts them about the wheat crops issue, one of them mocks the two, arguing that slave-grown crops are unfit for human consumption.
