Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is going to act in a movie for the first time. He will work with the director of Waves, Trey Edward Shults, on an untitled movie with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.

Story details are being kept secret while the movie is being made. Shults will direct from a script that he wrote with Tesfaye and his producing partner Reza Fahim.

Shultz and Ortega are executive producing, and Tesfaye, Fahim, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss are producing.

Tesfaye has been working on the project for a while and asked Shults to direct it in the past few months. Once he was on board, the two of them and Fahim started writing the script that they would give to Ortega and Keoghan in the end.

Even though Ortega and Keoghan have both had a lot of success in the past few years, they both made it clear that they wanted this to be their next project, and because of that, the movie was made.

Shults and Tesfaye not only got Ortega and Keoghan on board, but they also put together a team behind the scenes that include director of photography Chayse Irvin (Blonde). OPN, aka Daniel Lopatin (Good Time, Uncut Gems), is a composer and producer. He and The Weeknd are both working on the film’s score.

Even though this is Tesfaye’s first leading role in a feature film, he did have a small cameo as himself in Uncut Gems. He is also set to star in HBO’s The Idol, which he co-created with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Fahim is also one of the people who made the show.

Ortega has been on a roll lately, led by her Addams Family series, Wednesday, which broke all kinds of records. The number of people who watched the show on Netflix broke records, and it has been picked up for a second season.

On March 11, she will be hosting Saturday Night Live, and then she will be in Scream VI. Last week, Keoghan won a BAFTA for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, which was nominated for an Oscar and starred him in a supporting role.

He will be in Saltburn, the next movie by Emerald Fennell after Promising Young Woman, which won an Oscar. Shults is best known for his work on Waves and It Comes at Night, both of which got good reviews.

CAA, Manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby & Amir “Cash” Esmailian, and attorney Kenny Meiselas of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks represent Tesfaye.

Ortega is represented by CAA, Jackoway Austen Tyerman, and Gilbertson Entertainment. Keoghan is with WME, Entertainment 360, B-Side Management, and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern. Both WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman work for Shults.
