The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3 Review: With the cancellation of The Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic, which was scheduled to star Gina Carano’s Cara Dune, LucasFilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy stated that ideas for the series could find a place in The Mandalorian.
That promise appears to have been fulfilled in Season 3 Episode 3, which may disappoint fans who watch the program for its titular figure but brings back some of the focus on broken institutions and stifling bureaucracy that worked so well in Andor.
Din Djarin, Bo-Katan, and Grogu appear just briefly in “The Convert,” which focuses on cloning scientist Doctor Pershing (Omid Abtahi) and his existence on Coruscant as part of the New Republic’s amnesty program, providing a rich perspective on the new government’s fragility.
“The Convert” picks up just where Episode 2 left off, with Din waking up beneath Grogu and Bo protecting Katan’s gaze. Seeing the Mythosaur in the living waters certainly triggered something in Bo-Katan, but she doesn’t seem ready to recognize it, asking for confirmation that she didn’t envision the fabled beast and then dismissing the matter when she doesn’t get it.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 3 Review
What’s become evident about The Mandalorian season 3 is that it’s carefully planned and scripted, with most of the first few chapters devoted to setting up for bigger, more boisterous moments and reveals later on. Is this a positive or negative development?
It’s tough to say whether all of these shifting narrative elements will eventually come together in a satisfying way, but the story is building nicely and revisiting several intriguing characters and locations to give them more room to breathe.
“The Convert” begins off just where “The Mines of Mandalore” left off, with Din Djarin arriving seconds after Bo-Katan Kryze saved him from the depths of the Living Waters, where she beheld the majesty of a living, breathing Mythosaur with her own eyes.
Surprisingly, she doesn’t tell Din about her encounter, which reflects her tumultuous connection with The Creed and her personality-defining rejection of the old ways. But, as we’ll see later in the episode, her faith in her own convictions has been damaged by this event.
The dynamic and relationship between Bo-Katan and Din have constantly been one of the show’s strongest features, and seeing them spiral around each other and their opposing philosophies doesn’t seem like it will grow old any time soon.
And the fact that we see neither Katee Sackhoff’s nor Pedro Pascal’s faces in this episode demonstrates how talented Katee Sackhoff and Pedro Pascal are. Many actors would be hampered by the armor, but these two appear to have discovered its power.
The aerial duel between Din’s Naboo Starfighter and Bo-Gauntlet Katan’s and the TIE Interceptor squadron was chef’s kiss amazing. It has everything you might desire in an aerial fight scene: a crackling sense of speed, exhilarating mid-air moves, and massive explosions.
What makes Star Wars so brilliant in this regard is that each spacecraft has its own individuality. This scene was nerdy as hell, and delightfully so, from the way the Gauntlet twists its wings to drift and gain the drop on the Interceptors, to the upgraded N-1’s nimbleness and breakneck speed, to the famous, almost animalistic screech of the TIEs.
But, there is more to it than that. The airborne display, as The Mandalorian does so well, isn’t just for show, as it ends with TIE Bombers destroying Bo-home. Katan’s In the episode’s last act, there is a pull for her to return to the religion she was baptized into as a child, and again, however unwittingly, as an adult. She and Din have been welcomed back into the Tribe, but she is holding the Mythosaur-sized secret close to her heart for the time being.
