When Is Pluto Anime Coming? Unveiling the Long-Awaited Revelation!

Manga fans are very familiar with Astro Boy, which was turned into an animated TV show with a certain style of art, which is now called “anime” because of how famous it is.

Osamu Tezuka, who made Astro Boy, is also known by many other names, such as “Father of Manga,” “God of Manga,” and “Godfather of Manga.” So it shouldn’t have been a surprise that it wasn’t easy to bring the show back with a new version after he died.

Naoki Urasawa, who made the widely famous anime Monster, was the one who successfully changed the story and setting of Astro Boy. Urasawa followed in the footsteps of his biggest hero, Tezuka, and got the blessing of Tezuka’s son, Macoto Tezuka, when he made the award-winning series Pluto.

He was inspired by Astro Boy and used some of its characters, but he made up a whole new story and told it in his own way. The show will be one of many unique anime on Netflix, like Gamera-Rebirth and Scott Pilgrim.

Urasawa’s huge job was made easier by series co-author Takashi Nagasaki, who says, “Pluto inherits the philosophy of Tezuka and doesn’t just send an anti-war message; it also reminds us that there is suffering on both sides… but the only answer is peace.”

After 14 years since the manga series ended, Pluto is finally getting an anime on Netflix. Here’s everything you need to know about Pluto, the new show that will be based on Astro Boy.

Do They Have a Trailer for Pluto?

No, there isn’t a full trailer for Pluto yet. But Netflix did give a sneak peek of the new anime series. This gave people their first look at some of the main characters and a look at the high-definition art style.

In the teaser, we see Gesicht, a Europol inspector robot that looks like a person, on a mission to find a rogue robot.

What Is the Story of Pluto?

Urasawa and Nagasaki’s Pluto is based on Tezuka’s Astro Boy story “The Greatest Robot on Earth” from 1964. The manga series was published in the magazine Big Comic Original from September 2003 to April 2009.

Pluto takes place in the far future after humans and sentient robots have lived together peacefully for a few years after a brutal war. The story is driven by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a message against war.

Gesicht, a German robot detective for Europol and a war veteran, is looking into a string of killings of robots and humans around the world. The killer leaves his mark on the victims: two horn-like points sticking out of their heads.

Gesicht figures out from the signs that the killer is a robot. This would be the first time in the last 8 years that a robot killed a person. Seven of the best robots that humans have ever made, including Gesicht himself, are on the killer’s list.

So are people who work to protect the International Robot Laws, which give robots equal rights. The clock is ticking, and Gesicht needs to find out who is killing people in such a terrible way before time runs out.

Here’s what the movie’s official summary says:

“The famous Swiss robot Montblanc, who was a soldier in the 39th Asian War, is killed in a violent way. People and robots all over the world are sad about the death of a famous person. In the years after the war, Montblanc’s fame only grew because of how much he cared about nature and how kind he was.

Gesicht, a robot who used to be a fellow war warrior, is sent to look into what happened to Montblanc. In his search, Gesicht finds proof of a strange thing only known as “Pluto.” He also finds out about a plan to break up the eight expert robots from all over the world that helped win the war.

Gesicht is in a race against time to save the people who are still alive. He struggles with his memory, his morals, and a world full of hate as he tries desperately to protect the fragile balance of man and machine.

Studio M2 said at the 2017 Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June that they would be making an anime version of Pluto. In February 2023, Netflix bought the rights to stream the show alone, and Genco and Tezuka Productions kept working on it. Studio M2 is in charge of the animation.

Netflix has also named three of the actors who will voice the main characters in the show. Shinshu Fuji, whose voice you might know from Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I, will play Gesicht, the robot detective.

Atom (Astro Boy) will be voiced by Yōko Hikasa, who was also in the famous anime High School DxD. The voice of Uran will be done by Minori Suzuki, who voiced Regina in the first Pokémon cartoon.

Will There Be a Second Season of Pluto?

From September 2003 to April 2009, Naoki Urasawa’s Pluto manga ran in Shogakukan’s Seinen manga magazine Big Comic Original. It has 65 action-packed scenes, some of which can be quite long.

With such a long story, it would be impossible to fit all 65 plays into one season. So, it’s possible that the anime version of Pluto on Netflix will have more than one season, but that will depend on how well the first season does.
