Foo Fighters now have a new member.

The Grammy-winning rock band said that studio drummer Josh Freese would take over for drummer Taylor Hawkins who passed away in 2022.

The news came out at the beginning of Sunday’s Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts Livestream, which was of a studio session taped at Studio 606. Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, and Danny Carey from Tool all made funny cameos.

But in the end, Freese said “Um, excuse me,” and when he was shown on tape, it was clear that he had gotten the job, according to Variety. As the band hits the road this week, it’s still not clear if Freese is now a permanent part of the group or if he will just fill in for live shows.

“Guys, could we just play a song or something? Or two, or something,” Freese asked the band before they started playing songs from their soon-to-be-released record But Here We Are.

If Freese joined the band for good, he would be the third drummer (not counting Grohl), after Hawkins and William Goldsmith, both of whom played on the 1997 album The Colour and Shape. He joins Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee as a part of the band.

The band’s 11th album will come out next month. It will be the first Foo Fighters release since Hawkins’ death last year.

In a press release, the LP was called a “brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters went through over the last year” and also a “testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family.” It will be produced by Greg Kurstin, who has worked with Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Paul McCartney, and more.

Hawkins died in Colombia on March 25, 2022, while on tour with the band. In September, the band and the drummer’s family put on a tribute show with a lot of big names. Hawkins’ son, Oliver Shane, played drums on the 1997 hit “My Hero” by Foo Fighters. During the shows to honor Hawkins, Freese played with the band.

“I said, ‘Taylor’s drums need to be up there, and I want to play on his exact setup,'” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “I want THAT kind of energy on THAT stage. I want to sweat all over the same drums that he sweated all over every night. Don’t change a thing.'”

A few months later, when 2022 came to an end, the band released a statement that said it would be a “different band” without Hawkins.”As we say goodbye to the most difficult and tragic year that our band has ever known, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the people that we love and cherish most, and for the loved ones who are no longer with us,” the statement said.

It went on to say, “Foo Fighters was started 27 years ago to show how music can heal and how life goes on. And over the past 27 years, our fans have built a global community, a loyal support system that has helped us all get through the worst times together. A place to share our happiness and sadness, our hopes and fears, and to sing together about life through music.

“Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were–and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward,” the statement continued.

“We also know that Taylor loved his fans as much as he loved them. “And we know that when we see you again—which will be soon—he’ll be there with us every night in spirit,” the band said as they signed off.
